Fermented Shark and Raw Puffin.
Hearing about Iceland and where it is, I'm expecting most of the restaurants around Iceland to be seafood. This isn't a problem as I absolutely love fish, but looking at the fermented shark that they eat, it is definitely not my sort of meal! Over there they call it Hákarl and it is hung out to dry for four to five months giving it a strong ammonia smell and taste. One of my friends who has just come back from Reykjavik said that all the locals sit and watch you try it to see how you deal with it as someone has been sick before just from the smell!! Well I certainly won't be trying the shark there...
Having a look further into the centre of the city, there are some english and american cuisines to accommodate for the tourists. I can imagine that if I choose to eat out, I will go to somewhere like that! It sort of feels like you're not embracing the full culture of Iceland that way, but I'd rather eat what I know and like than be ill for the whole holiday.
Iceland are also known for their incredible hot dogs so at least that won't feel like cheating! There is a place called 'Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur' that stands for 'Best Hot Dogs in Town' so seems like the best one to go to and try this authentic Icelandic hot dog.
I will be bringing pot noodles and cereal bars with me as I won't be able to afford to eat out every night! There will also be some cafes and shops at some of the stops on our long trips so should be able to get something like a toastie one day.
