Home to the Vikings.

The population of Iceland is 339,734 people and roughly 120,000 of these live in its capital centre, Reykjavik. Now this is nearly the population of two small towns where I come from so I can't believe how such a small island offers all it does! Home to some natural wonders such as the blue lagoon and northern lights, this small city seems to combine history and culture to provide a unique trip to anyone who visits.
Reykjavik was founded by Norwegian Vikings fleeing from their king and the Celtic slaves they picked up in Scotland and Ireland in the 9th century. From being just a handful of farmhouses to the modern city it is today, Iceland became an unusual popular tourist destination post-war and is now at its peak. All I hear about is people going to see Reykjavik and what a place it is! All I can imagine is overcrowded streets with hundreds of people taking pictures of all the sights, much like what we see in London every day! You can understand it's attractiveness though with Iceland being voted the safest country in the world ten times. In the city of Preston we can't imagine a world with that little crime so it will be intriguing to see how calm I feel walking down the streets late at night. It's also going to be interesting to see if that many tourists are disrupting the relaxed aura of the city.
